THE WILLIAM FAULKNER SOCIETY WILL SPONSOR THE FOLLOWING
PANEL ON WILLIAM FAULKNER TO BE OFFERED AT THE AMERICAN
LITERATURE ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING, JUNE 1-4, 2000

Please respond directly to Dr. Dore. Thanks.

Panel name: "FAULKNER, SPEECH AND IDENTITY"

This panel will explore "speech" in relation to identity in Faulkner's
novels. I am particularly interested in papers that seek to link
prohibited or blocked speech to troubled identities in Faulkner, but I
welcome other approaches to the topic as well. How might a particular
character's difficulty (or ease) with speaking reflect a difficulty (or
ease) with achieving a sense of self? How is Faulkner's representation of
speech particularly modernist? How is it particularly "American"?
"Speech" may be interpreted broadly, but papers might focus on speech
between characters, internal monologues, or narrative as a form of speech.
Potential topics might include (but are not limited to) silence, legal or
cultural regulations of speech (e.g. obscenity), unconscious regulations of
speech (e.g. reticence, stuttering, aphasic language), logos, excessive
narrative, or speech as determinative of gender, sexuality, and/or race.

Detailed proposals (250 words) by November 15th to Florence Dore.
