The cultural and academic currency of multiculturalism
and writing by women of color coupled with the
simultaneous onslaught of backlash politics like
Proposition 187 and the dismantling of Affirmative
Action programs make it an interesting and crucial
time for women of color writers to respond to this
(dis)juncture of the academic and the social that is
shaping into the politics of the new century.
We are interested in critical essays that attempt to
go beyond and through conventional discourses of
feminism and ethnicity, critically exploring the
intersections of any or all aspects of writing by
women of color. Writing by women of color might be
examined as not only creativity and art but also as
commodity and currency. Essays should be dialoging
indirectly or directly with these kinds of questions:
How is writing by women of color transformed or
re-formed when they are read/used as "authentic
cultural artifacts"? What function does writing by
women of color serve on local and diasporic
communities? What are the effects of globalization,
multinational economies, and multiculturalism on
writing by women of color? What is writing for women
of color? Who are women of color as writers? Who has
"permission" to read, write, and publish our writing?
Often contradictory, these questions explore the
social, political, and familial landscapes that
migratory women of color must traverse and converse in
their writing. In what ways can/does our writing take
us to/through these mindscapes? What shapes do these
mindscapes take and how do we go there?
