International Conference at Trent University May 24-27 2000. Call for
Papers.
COMMUNITY, TRANSGRESSION AND EXCESS: A CONFERENCE ON
GEORGES BATAILLE
Against the background of a renewed interest in the thought and writings
of Bataille, the conference will bring together distinguished scholars
from a diversity of fields and perspectives to critically reflect on his
ideas and their contemporary significance for theory and practice. The
conference aims particularly to focus on the question of community - the
community which excludes community, Acéphale, the community of writing,
the community of lovers - which Jean-Luc Nancy and Maurice Blanchot have
seen as a crucial theme in his work. But this theme is not intended to be
exclusive or narrowly defined, and we welcome contributions on any aspect
of Bataille's work - philosophical, aesthetic, anthropological, literary,
religious, ethical, political, erotic, etc- whether considered in itself
or as linked to the thought of others.
The conference will be held in the congenial setting of the riverside campus
of Trent University, in Peterborough, Ontario, Wednesday May 24 to Saturday
May 27 2000.
The conference is being sponsored by the newly established Centre for the
Study of Theory, Culture and Politics, in conjunction with the Graduate
Program in Methodologies for the Study of Western History and Culture.
Enquiries, and proposals for presentations (orally, 30 min max), including a
title and short abstract, should be sent to:
