On Saturday, April 1st, 2000, the English Department of William Paterson
University in Wayne, New Jersey (20 miles from NYC), will host a writer's
conference, "Internationalism in Writing and Literature"--a day of
participatory workshops, panel sessions, lectures, and readings in critical
and creative writing and literature. In addition to offering workshops in
Fiction, Poetry, Creative Non-Fiction, Screenwriting, Publishing, Literature
and other areas, we are honored to present keynote speaker Yusef Komunyakaa,
who has published eleven books of poems, including Neon Vernacular: New and
Selected Poems 1977-1989, winner of the 1994 Pulitzer Prize and Thieves of
Paradise, a finalist for the 1999 National Book Critics Circle Award.
Komunyakaa is a professor in the Council of Humanities and Creative Writing
Program at Princeton University and a recently elected Chancellor of the
Academy of American Poets.
Proposals are sought for panels, discussions or workshops exploring the
broadly defined theme "Internationalism in Writing and Literature."
Proposals may focus on any genre of critical or creative writing or
literature (preferably contemporary), and might address the following: How
can "internationalism" be productively theorized? How can educators
(elementary, secondary, college-level) promote international perspectives in
the writing or literature classroom? How have American writers or American
literary movements been influenced by international literatures or
experiences? How can creative writers benefit from an awareness of
contemporary international writing?
