MELUS (Multi-Ethnic Literatures of the U.S.) Conference
New Orleans, Spring 2000
Deadline: November 15, 1999
"The Other America: Caribbean Perspectives on U.S. Identity"
We invite paper proposals on the formation and performance of racial
and ethnic identities in the U.S. as viewed from the Caribbean. Of
particular interest will be papers that present Caribbean models of
identity that question U.S. conceptions of race and ethnicity. Also of
interest will be those papers that explore the perceived threat to local
cultures in the Caribbean that the U.S., as cultural hegemon of the
Americas, represents. Papers on the anglophone, francophone, and
hispanophone Caribbean are welcome.
Panel co-chairs: Jessica Adams (Tulane University, English) and Richard
Watts (Tulane University, French & Italian)
