Transitional Voices: Resistance, Process, Perspective
UPDATED DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: November 15, 1999
CALL FOR PAPERS: The Arizona State University Graduate Scholars of English
Association and Department of English are pleased to sponsor the eighth
annual Southwest Graduate Literature Symposium, March 3-5 2000, at Arizona
State University in Tempe.
The conference entitled "Transitional Voices: Resistance, Process,
Perspective" invites you to explore the ways in which voices create or
engage shifting contexts. This conference is open to papers on any aspect of
literature, film, theater and language studies and pedagogies. We also
encourage panel submissions.
Because the theme of the conference is inclusive and
interdisciplinary, the following list of questions is one way to begin
thinking about how the theme may apply to your own work. The questions are
meant to motivate, but not limit, your thinking.
* What is a transitional voice?
* How can/do voices from different time periods and cultures speak to
one another?
* What voices are contributing to the literatures, films, and arts of
the late 20th century? How are these voices shaping the literary and
artistic climate of the new millenium?
* How do different ways of knowing and understanding "texts" (voices
from art, film, drama, and music) expand current perspectives on what a text
is or is not?
* How do different genres converse and converge?
* How have sexually, racially, ethnically, and economically
marginalized voices spoken their resistance, recontextualized the canon, and
inspired societal change?
* How have national literatures, films, and/or arts given voice to
changing/evolving national identities?
* In what ways do contemporary theories of pedagogy engage student
voices in reshaping traditional classrooms?
* How does technology change the notion of voice, resistance, and/or
process?
* How do theory, practice, and creativity intersect in published
voices?
All proposals related to Renaissance Studies will be eligible for the John
Doebler Memorial Award, presented at the general session on the evening of
March 3. Presenters who wish to have their papers considered for the
Doebler Award should submit full-length, conference-ready papers (not
abstracts) in accordance with the submission specifications outlined below
