Call for panel participants on the subject of Walking for the annual North
American Interdisciplinary Conference on Environment and Community at the
University of Nevada, Reno, February 10-12, 2000. Complete information for
the conference follows the description of this call.

In the last several decades, the popularity of walking narratives has
increased, and more recently the act of walking has (re)emerged as a
legitimate form of exercise in America. Despite this seeming
resurgence, there is a long history of walking narratives in and beyond the
United States. This panel will explore any aspect of the literature of
walking and the popularity of this most natural mode of human locomotion.

Possible Topics include but are not limited to:

Walking and the Wild
Walking and Popular Culture
Walking and Sense of Place
Walking as Subversive Activity
Walking and Pilgrimage
Walking and Class
Role of Gender in Walking Narratives
National Differences in Walking Narratives

The deadline for panel submissions is Friday, November 26, 1999. Please
send full contact information with a one page abstract (or full paper) and
cv (no email submissions please) to:
