CFP: Liminality & Victor Turner (11/30; ALA, 5/25-5/28)

From: Rob Friedman (docrob@erols.com)
Date: Mon Nov 01 1999 - 16:01:18 EST

Victor Turner's project of symbolic anthropology continues to thrive as
an entry point into American literary studies and the cultural criticism
it engenders. From liminality to social drama, Turner's concepts have
affected and are reshaping many critical practices that inform our
approaches to American literature. For this panel, we seek papers that
suggest where the conversation between literary studies and cultural
anthropology is headed. Paper topics can include but are not limited to
examinations of the disciplinary connections or distinctions that derive
from Turner's concepts. Welcome are papers that demonstrate the
conjunction of other forms of critical practice with Turner's theories
of communitas, anti-structure and pilgrimage as they can be identified
in genre, author or period studies. Graduate students and independent
scholars are encouraged to send paper abstracts to: Rob Friedman, Dept.
of English, NYIT, 1855 Broadway, NY, NY 10023. E-mail: docrob@erols.com
V-mail: 212 261-1726 Deadline: 11/30/99
