Murder, Massacre, Mayhem:
The Poetics Of Violence
in French Literature and Society
April 7-8, 2000

>From images of massacre in the Chansons de geste to symbolic sacrifice in
the theater of Genet, the trope of violence has reappeared incessantly
throughout the history of French culture. The dawn of the new millennium
provides us with an excellent vantage point from which to examine the
numerous images of violence that have permeated French society and
influenced its socio-cultural perspectives since its incipit as
nation-state. In what way does violence subvert or bolster particular
socio-political configurations? How have different historical periods
upheld, undermined or defined themselves with regards to revolutions,
executions, inquisitions and other acts of violence against groups or
individuals?
This interdisciplinary conference welcomes papers examining the role of
violence in the formation of all aspects of French society, including
literature, sociology, politics, anthropology, art, religion, psychology,
and historical perspectives. Proposals are invited to explore thematics of
violence from the Middle Ages to the present day.
Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
*Violence and alterity
*Representational violence in Classic and Romantic Drama
*Poetry and revolt
*Art as metaphor of self-annihilation
*Violence and Enlightenment philosophy
*Ideologies of violence and religion
*Colonization and racial strife
*Violence and Historicity
*Text as sacrifice
*Rage and repression
Please submit a one-page abstract (papers may be given in either French or
English) along with your name, addresses (mailing and electronic), phone
number(s), and academic affiliation to the email address (preferable) or to
the UCLA Department of French address below. All submissions must be
postmarked by February 1, 2000. Papers are scheduled for a 20 minute reading
time. Selected papers will be published in a special conference issue of
Parole Gelées, the graduate student journal of the UCLA Department of French.
