SUFFRAGE CITY! WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE AND CULTURAL REPRESENTATION.
Saturday November 11th, 2000.
A Day Conference organized by the English Department of the University of Wolverhampton and Women's History Network Midlands Region.
Themes of Conference:
Suffrage Novels and short stories. Suffrage (political) song. The relationship between art, 'propaganda' and gender. Suffrage ephemera (eg. postcards). Suffrage and modernism. The suffragists and suffragettes as 'daughters' of the New Woman. Women's suffrage and/in the periodical presses. Men and suffrage. Religion and suffrage. Biography. Sexuality and suffrage. Visual images and iconography. Suffrage, performativity and space. Suffrage and other political movements. Representations of working-class women in the suffrage movement. Later C20 uses of suffrage imagery and iconography (eg. Mary Poppins!).
If you wish to give a paper on the above or any other women's suffrage theme please send abstracts of c.250 words to either Paula Bartley (History), Janis Lomas (History) or Rosie Miles (English) at the University of Wolverhampton, Dudley Campus, Castle View, Dudley, DY1 3HR. Proposals should be sent in by May 1st 2000. Papers will be 20 minutes long.
