CALL FOR PAPERS

"Time of Transition: African-American Voices in Mid-Century American
Literature"
A Regional Literary Conference for Graduate Students and Faculty
Friday, April 7, 2000
Minnesota State University, Mankato

This conference will examine African-American writers from 1920 through
the 1960's. We are interested in issues of identity,
interrelationships and literary influences, philosophy, religion and
ideology, America and democracy, gender issues, and the novel as
protest. We hope for a wide variety of approaches, including feminism,
Marxism, gender, cultural, and reader-response to name a few.
Proposals for multimedia presentations pertaining to the time period
will also be accepted.

Paper and panel topics may include:

        Zora Neale Hurston as Anthropologist
        Richard Wright and Proletarian Literature
        Wright and Existentialism
        Ralph Ellison's "Juneteenth"
        African-American Writers and the Expatriate Experience
        The Influence of Jazz
        Ellison's criticism of Wright
        Visions of the South
        Hurston and Feminism
        Langston Hughes/James Baldwin and Sexual Identity
        Hurston and Contemporary African-American Women Writers
        Ralph Ellison and Modernism
        Gwendolyn Brooks and the Civil Rights Movement
        Leroi Jones (Amiri Baraka) and the Beats
        Relationship to Political and Cultural Movements
        Langston Hughes and Harlem

Presentations should be no more than fifteen minutes long. Panels will
consist of 3-4 presenters with time for discussion. Proposals for
papers and/or panels should include the following: (1) a title, (2) an
abstract not to exceed 300 words per individual, and (3) a brief
one-paragraph statement about the presenter(s), including academic
affiliation and email address. Selected papers presented at the
conference will be bound and placed in the Minnesota State University
library and made available to the public.

Deadline for submission of abstracts: January 19, 2000.
Notification of acceptance will be sent by February 15, 2000.
