Essays are solicited for Prose Fiction and Early Modern Sexualities, a
collection which historicizes and theorizes ways in which sexual desire
and practices are constructed in early modern prose fiction.
Contributions should explore any kind of early modern prose fiction
(e.g. novella, popular and courtly romances, fictions in Latin) printed
between 1580-1640. Topics may include but are not restricted to: women
and their relationship to the masculine; male and female homoeroticism;
the erotics of male friendship and other queer relations; cross-dressing
and fiction; sexualities and "race," class, kinship, and nationalism;
pornography and fiction; household economies and sexualities;
sexualities and the construction of space (sex and geography/sex and
early modern ethnography); the economic basis of sexualities in prose
fiction; sexualities, marriage, and courtship; the print market as an
agent in the constructions of the discourses of early modern
sexualities; relationship between prose fiction and other genres (e.g.
drama, poetry, travel literature, conduct books). Essays should be
approximately 8500-9000 words. Deadline for completed essays is August
31, 2000.
