First European Conference of the American

04/12/2000 - 04/18/2000
BRUSSELS - BELGIUM - EUROPE
Science, Literature and the Arts: Where are the Boundaries?

CALL FOR PAPERS
***************

Science and Culture generate a very intriguing field of interdisciplinary
scientific research that interests artists and scientists alike. But what
about transdisciplinary research? Why is it so fascinating, why is it so
fashionable? These questions urge a special meeting. And who does not want
to find out:

what it really means to do interdisciplinary research;
what the real differences are between European and American research;
whether it is possible to group European and American scholars alike in an
international transdisciplinary research network (SLSA)?

This First European Conference of the American Society for Literature and
Science (SLS) will be held at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Brussels
Free University, Belgium) from April 12th to April 18th 2000. The SLS
holds conferences in the US each fall. However, in 2000, for the first
time, the SLS will organize a meeting outside the US. To make it all work,
it is important that all presentations pertain to science in the making.
Although research findings an sich are evidently of utmost importance,
what should get all attention on this occasion is how (and why) these
results of scientific inquiry are obtained.

Invited speakers
Jim Elkins, Evelynn Hammonds, Barbara Stafford (USA);
John Christie, Nelly Oudshoorn, Sally Shuttleworth (EUROPE).

Second Call for Papers
Submit a 250 word abstract with title. Pre-organized panels for

be taken up. Include too a brief list of keywords. Please print in block
paragraphs and include as heading (1) your name, (2)
affiliation/institution, (3) e-mailaddress (4) title of paper, (Bear in
mind that we will eventually use abstracts of accepted papers in the
program book, so make your copy as revised and clean as possible. A chance
for revision of abstracts will avail itself in the spring, though clean
copy is needed at all stages since we are not yet sure in what measure we
will be scanning, writing from disks, or xeroxing for camera ready copy
for our master program-book files, although e-mailed proposals are
strongly recommended (please 'paste' but do not send as 'attachment').
During December, the Program Committee will begin sorting proposals and
organizing panels (see below for program and formats; 3-4 concurrent
sessions).
