Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist, New York Times

Kathleen M. Sullivan
Stanley Morrison Professor of Law and Dean, Stanford University Law =
School

Cass Sunstein
Karl N. Llewellyn Professor of Jurisprudence, The University of Chicago =

Purpose of the Symposium:

May 4, 2000 will mark 30 years since a confrontation between the Ohio =
National Guard and demonstrators protesting the Vietnam War left four =
Kent State University students dead and nine others wounded. Beginning =
in 2000, Kent State University plans to hold an annual scholarly =
symposium focusing on the rights, responsibilities and challenges of =
living in a democratic society.

Call for Papers:

The symposium will examine the current status of freedom of expression =
in American society by exploring the limits of free expression and the =
appropriateness of these limits. Paper topics might include hate speech, =
political protest, libel, obscenity, the Internet, etc. We also welcome =
proposals involving historical, philosophical, sociological and other =
approaches to the freedom of expression and comparative analyses. We are =
especially interested in papers examining the conflict between freedom =
and order that occurred at Kent State on May 4, 1970.

If a proposal is accepted, a $2,000 honorarium will be paid at the end =
of the symposium upon successful completion of all responsibilities, =
which include providing a final copy of the paper by April 1, 2000, to =
allow discussants time to prepare. A book based on the symposium is also =
being planned.

The deadline for receipt of a one-page proposal and curriculum vitae is =
December 1, 1999. These materials should be sent to Dr. Thomas R. =
Hensley, Department of Political Science, Kent State University, Kent, =
OH 44242. Hensley can also be reached at thensley@kent.edu, (330) =
