“This Launch Into the Wide World”: Essays on Fanny Hill
Edited by Patsy Fowler and Alan Jackson
Fanny Hill (or Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure) is one of the most
enduring novels of the eighteenth century, despite efforts over the
years to keep it away from the reading public by government officials
and cautious publishers. Yet it survives and enjoys continued interest:
in recent years, the novel has been often reprinted, has been made into
a film, and has been the inspiration for other novels, most notably
Erica Jong’s own version of Frances Hill’s adventure; and at present,
eight book editions are currently in print (compared to only four for
Richardson’s Pamela and four for his Clarissa). Unfortunately, aside
from a handful of articles, no one has devoted an academic book to the
novel and its implications. While this book should be of interest to
most scholars of eighteenth century literature, it should also attract
those studying issues of gender, of class, of sexuality, and of power.
“This Launch Into the Wide World”: Essays on Fanny Hill will be a
collection of fifteen to twenty essays by eighteenth century scholars
who explore the rich literary value of the novel, its characters, its
cultural and psychological implications, and its larger meaning. The
book will be divided into three sections: historical perspectives,
gender issues, and contemporary implications. We are looking for essays
on a wide-range of topics, including but not limited to the following:
-- the various editions of the novel;
-- readership of erotic novels in the eighteenth century;
-- comparison to other erotic novels of the period;
-- a bibliographic review;
-- Fanny’s fellow prostitutes;
-- homosexuality;
-- sex and power;
-- the language of sex;
-- patriarchy;
-- capitalism and industrialism;
-- modern representations of the novel;
-- teaching Fanny Hill.
