                  MELVILLE: "EARLY" AND "LATE"

        AMERICAN LITERATURE ASSOCIATION ANNUAL CONFERENCE
                         MAY 25-28, 2000
                       HYATT REGENCY HOTEL
                       LONG BEACH, CALIF.

     A special Melville panel at the May 2000 meeting of the American
Literature Association will focus on the relationships between Melville's
later work of the 1860s, 70s, and 80s--such as "Battle Pieces," "Clarel,"
"John Marr," "Timoleon," and "Billy Budd"--and his earlier work of the
1840s and 50s. Presenters are invited to focus on any of Melville's
writings in this later period and/or to explore any aspect of the
relationships between "late" and "early" texts: intellectual, formal,
rhetorical, ideological, biographical, political.

     Please send three-page abstracts or completed papers to Samuel
Otter, English Department, 232 Wheeler Hall #1030, University of Calif.,
Berkeley, Calif. 94720-1030. The new deadline for receipt of materials is
February 7, 2000.

     Papers should not exceed ten typed, double-spaced pages and
presentations should take fifteen to twenty minutes. This panel is
sponsored by the Melville Society.
