VIII CONFERENCE ON ENGLISH LITERATURE "THE ROAD FROM GEORGE ORWELL: HIS ACHIEVEMENT AND LEGACY"

University of Alcala, Madrid * 11-12 May 2000

To commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of George Orwell's death, the Department of Modern Philology at the University of Alcala is organising a conference to examine not only his work but the important mark he left on contemporary British literature. The conference will take place at the University of Alcala on May 11th and 12th, 2000.

Papers are invited on any aspects related to the figure of George Orwell, his thought and his work, as well as his influence on the literature of the second half of the twentieth century. Special emphasis will be placed on contemporary political satire and the development of dystopian or anti-utopian fiction, written by authors such as Anthony Burgess, Emma Tennant, Doris Lessing, Zoë Fairbairns, Russell Hoban, Maggie Gee, Fay Weldon, Ben Elton, P. D. James, Robert Harris, Jeff Noon, James Lovegrove, Julian Barnes o Alice Thomson.

Abstracts of papers (not more than 25 lines in English) should be sent to the Conference Coordinator at Alcala University before March 15th, 2000. Final papers in English (MLA format), should not exceed 15 pages (20 minutes delivery) and will be handed in during the conference. A selection of the papers given will be published.
