CALL FOR PAPERS:
THE 11TH ANNUAL SOUTHLAND GRADUATE STUDENT CONFERENCE
"VISION AND VISIONARIES: SEEING WITH AND THROUGH THE EYE"
28 APRIL 2000, UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, LOS ANGELES, ENGLISH DEPARTMENT
The 2000 Southland Conference will examine relations between word and
image, as well as literary representations of ways of seeing and
visionary experience. We invite papers from all periods and genres of
literary and visual culture. In addition, we welcome investigations of
the ideological implications of these relations and representations.
The following is a list of suggested topics, which is not meant to be
exhaustive:
illumination, illustration and cover art, and its relation to text;
writers as visual artists; visual artists as writers; or the
relationships between writers and visual artists;
text as visual art;
vision and technology;
vision and aesthetic experience;
vision and interpretation: relationships between interpreting subjects
(artist or reader) and the objects of interpretation;
writers as visionaries (divine, prophetic, apocalyptic);
other forms of internal visions, including dreams, trances, psychosis,
apparitions and narcotic-induced hallucinations;
pictorial and picturesque narrative;
vision=92s position in relation to the other senses in literary works;
genre and vision;
gender and vision;
pedagogical uses of visual culture in the teaching of literature.
Please submit an abstract, no longer than 250 words, by 25 February
2000. Please include you name, address, e-mail, phone number,
affiliation, and a working title for your paper. E-mail submissions are
acceptable. All papers will be limited to fifteen minutes (no longer
than eight double spaced pages). Letters of acceptance will be sent out
in mid-March. Final papers must be submitted to the panels in mid-April.
