Accepting submissions for Modern Language Association, Children's
Literature Division panel, "Surveillance in Children's Literature," to be
presented at the December 2000 MLA conference in Washington D.C.

Eavesdropping and spying abound in children's literature, as adults and
children alike perform surreptitious observations. Some of the many
questions that this idea might provoke include: What do such
eavesdropping and spying suggest about power relationships between adults
and children? How does surveillance become a tool of power? A means of
repression? A method of rebellion and insurrection? What are the
implications for considering the reader (particularly of picture books)
as a secret observer?

March 15, 2000 is the deadline for abstracts (250-500 words) of papers
analyzing some aspect of the many ramifications and resonances of
surveillance in children's literature.
