'WRITING TABOOS'
The post-graduates of the University of Edinburgh’s French Section
invite contributions to a research conference exploring the subject of
‘Writing Taboos’. The conference will look at the ways in which
literary, historical or social taboos have been, are or will be
produced, reinforced, circumvented or challenged in literature,
non-fiction or film. Possible subject areas could include but need not
be restricted to:
- Building up and breaking down totems and taboos
- (Re-)presentations of taboos
- (Self-)censorship
- Political correctness v. the totalitarianism of consensus
- The unsaid, the unspoken and the unsayable
- Violence, cruelty, sex and sensuality
- Provocation
- Literary, political, historical controversies
- The transgen(d)eric: genre and gender as / against taboo
- Taboos of literary criticism and literary theory
- Role of post-graduates in challenging the taboos of literary
criticism and theory
Contributions are invited from post-graduate students working in all
areas of French studies, but topics of a comparative or
cross-disciplinary nature are also warmly welcome, particuarly where
French theorists are under discussion.
The conference will take place on 29th April 2000. Proposals for
papers in English or French of around 20 minutes, accompanied where
possible by abstracts of 150 - 200 words, should be sent by 31st
January 2000 to:
