ICAF 2000: "Horizons Past, Present, and Future"
Holiday Inn Select -- Bethesda, MD USA
  Thursday, September 14 - Saturday, September 16, 2000
In Partnership with The Expo 2000

As Western culture gears up for a much-anticipated "New
Millennium," social, economic and technological developments
promise to change the place of comic art within popular culture
worldwide. At the same time, scholarship has begun to challenge
seriously, if not overturn, traditional histories of comic art: its
origins, lineage and nature.

In short, both the future and the past of comics are in flux, as the
horizons of history and form are being pushed further out. In this
light, ICAF 2000 invites a thorough reexamination of the past,
present and future of comic art and comics scholarship (and, more
broadly, cultural discourses about comics).

Topics may include, but are not limited to:
 - Re-explorations of national or cultural traditions in comics and
     scholarship
 - Revisionings of form, and the history/future of form
 - Reexaminations of contemporary markets, cultures, authors and
     trends
 - The possible impact of globalism and new media on comic art

What is ICAF?

ICAF is an international summit at which artists, scholars, editors,
curators, and all those with a passion for comics can meet and
share ideas. The format allows for a wide variety of activities:
formal or less formal lectures (but always supported by visuals),
panel and roundtable discussions, chalk-talks by distinguished
cartoonists, exhibits, and social gatherings.

ICAF is sponsored by Georgetown University's Department of
French; it regularly enjoys the support of a number of embassies
and cultural organizations. ICAF's distinctive international flavor
allows comics scholars and enthusiasts to meet and interact with
their counterparts from across the globe, to the enjoyment and
benefit of all.

Would You Like to Take Part in ICAF?

Each presenter gets a 20-minute-maximum slot on the program, in
addition to another 10 minutes to field questions. You do not have
to read a paper word for word, and may talk from notes if you
prefer. We do expect you to support your talk with visuals (slides,
transparencies). Please be sure to include your A/V requirements
along with your proposal.

Submitting a Proposal

Your proposal should not exceed two single-spaced typewritten
pages, or approximately 750 words. It should include your name
and all relevant contact information (address, phone, fax, and e-
mail), as well as your affiliation if applicable. Please be as specific
as possible in the description of your proposed talk, and don't
forget to include your A/V needs. Our deadline is March 31, 2000;
you will receive a reply by the beginning of May.

Submit your proposal to Cécile Danehy at Wheaton College.
Proposals via e-mail (within the body of your message, not as an
attachment) are strongly preferred: <cdanehy@wheatonma.edu>.
You may also submit your proposal via fax (508-285-8236) or via
post:
