Proposals are invited for a panel entitled "Commercial
Epistemologies," to be presented at the Third International
Crossroads in Cultural Studies Conference, 21-25 June 2000, in
Birmingham, UK.
This panel will focus on the epistemological mechanisms and effects
of commercial activities, past and present, with an emphasis on
theoretically-informed close readings of particular examples. The
goal of the panel is to consider the correspondence or dissonance
between theoretical formulations and actual commercial practices,
given that (as Dean McCannell says) modern commercial culture "is
more revolutionary in-itself than the most revolutionary
consciousness so far devised." Questions to address could include:
What are the epistemological claims and effects of chat rooms, web
pages, and other web-based enterprises? What are the epistemological
effects of virtual tourism via magazine, television, video, and
computer? How do entrepreneurs commercialize utopian ideas,
revolutionary beliefs, and other tools of epistemological innovation?
What are the commercial uses of pragmatism, multiculturalism, and
other epistemological relativism? How do particular consumer
revolutions affect the possibility for individual or political
epistemological revolution?
The format of the panel will emphasize discussion rather than reading
of papers. Panelists will be required to submit their papers in
advance of the conference, and to summarize their arguments and
findings for the audience. Panelists are also required to
pre-register for the conference, including payment of the
registration fee, no later than April 30, 2000; "early-bird"
registration rates apply until March 15, 2000. Complete information
on the conference can be found at

To submit a paper for consideration, please send an abstract by 31
January, 2000 via email (preferred) or regular mail to:
