Session description:

This session explores implications of green thought and action for democratic
theory. Papers might propose, develop or critique green models of democracy
that combine direct, representative and/or participatory elements, or might
ask of a specific model "how do we get there from here" with reference to
such current practical and intellectual impasses as consumer culture or the
nature of consent. Others might discuss green ways of solving problems within
democratic theory (such as, how to spread decision-making across "experts"
and "nonexperts," or how to decentralize control), or green ways of
re-shaping or re-orienting thinking about democracy (in the context, for
example, of "animal rights" or of the inclusin of "ecological balance" as one
of the primary democratic values along with "freedom" and "justice"). A paper
might elaborate or criticize green usages or definitions of any of the key
terms of new paradigm politics, from "freedom" and "justice" through "time,"
"space," "deliberation," "identity," "community" and "economic indices."
Papers concerning issues of poverty, race and/or global cultural-economic
differentials are especially welcome, as are other approaches to
intersections of democratic and green theory and practice.

Please send abstracts of up to 200 words (or papers) to: Madeleine Brainerd
All abstracts must be received by: February 12, 2000.
