SUMMARY OF SESSION
Psychoanalysis has been a troubling presence in cultural studies.
Initially, its alleged presumption of a universal psychic structuration was
critiqued by a number of cultural studies scholars for whom it is precisely
the distribution of social practices of categorisation that shapes
subjective experience. Then, during the nineties and following the work of
those such as Judith Butler and Homi Bhabha, a certain psychoanalytic
reading again became viable or arguably central for analyses of the social
production of subjectivity. Within this reading the psyche is often
discussed as a paradoxical site: both the effect of practices of subjection
and socialisation and what resists or exceeds such practices. More
recently, other scholars have sought to historicise the notion of the psyche
as a modern ideological system and to trace the processes of the production
and management of this internal space. In this context, this session will
ask: What is the future for psychoanalysis in cultural studies? To what
extent is that future dependent only on the ability of psychoanalysis to
provide a legitimising framework for a politics of resistance? In other
words, has cultural studies done justice to the project of psychoanalysis,
and to the problems that it raises for an analysis of subjectivity? We are
seeking papers that engage these questions either through a discussion of
current trends in cultural studies or through psychoanalytically informed
research.

This session has been approved for the Crossroads in Cultural Studies

February 18, 2000.
