Call for Papers for a Special Session at the 2000 MLA

*The Colonial Garden: Landscapes of Violence*

In what ways has U.S. colonialism taken possession of the land
through its representations of the natural world? What are some
of the relationships between early U.S. representations of the
land and the mechanisms of colonial violence practiced by the
emerging nation?

I am seeking papers that explore the relationships between nation
and landscape. In addition to work that examines literary and
cultural texts of the emerging nation, I am also looking for
papers that analyze intersections between ecocritical and
postcolonial literary theory.
