Second Annual ART AND SOUL Conference

We invite you to explore the intersection of religious faith and literary
and cinematic art at the Second Annual Art and Soul Conference, sponsored
by Baylor University. This year's focus is on The Oxford Christians,
though any work investigating religious theology as manifested in writing
or film will be considered.
Featured Speakers include:
Anne Lamott
Bruce Hornsby
Brett Lott
Hal Crowther
Lee Smith
Jane Hirshfield
Philip Zaleski
In addition to presentations by the above speakers, we will also feature
lectures by Jack Butler, Atlantic Monthly fiction editor Michael Curtis,
Christian Science Monitor film critic David Sterritt, Ethelbert Miller,
Katie Singer, Joni Rodgers, Diane Glancy, Marilyn Krysl, Ralph Wood, Willie
Varela, Greg Garrett, and many other writers, scholars, editors, and critics.
Major speakers for Art & Soul 2001 include acclaimed fiction writer Lee
Smith, author, scholar, and editor of the annual Best Spiritual Writing
(Harper San Fransisco) Philip Zaleski, Buddhist poet and critic Jane Hirshfield,
essayist Hal Crowther, and Anne Lamott, novelist, essayist, and self-proclaimed
"left-wing Christian."
All research on religion and the arts (including literature and film)
and all creative works by writers of faith or writers writing about faith
will be considered for presentation in concurrent sessions. We particulary
welcome papers on the scholarly emphasis for 2001, The Oxford Christians,
looking at the works of C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Dorothy Sayers,
and other twentieth-century Oxonians.
Deadline for one-page proposals is October 1, 2000.
