CFP: Illustrated Texts and Collective Identity

Midwest MLA Conference
Kansas City, MO
November 2-4, 2000

Proposals are invited for papers discussing the use of illustrated texts
to define and represent groups of people. These might include illustrated
periodicals or individual volumes, such as Alain Locke's "The New Negro,"
Jacob Riis's "How the Other Half Lives," Walker Evans's and James Agee's
"Let Us Now Praise Famous Men," or John Steinbeck's "America and
Americans."

Topics might include the following:
--How is the collective identity of this group of people defined and
represented?
--Who is included and who is not included in the group? How do issues of
race, class, gender, or ethnicity emerge or remain submerged in the text?
--What concepts of individual or collective identity play out in the text?
--What different forms of representation (photographs, drawings, essays,
short stories, and so on) are included in the text? How do these
different kinds of texts interact with one another?

250-500 word abstracts or completed papers (suitable for 15-20 minute
presentations) should be postmarked or emailed by March 27, 2000.
Panelists must be MMLA members by June 1, 2000.
