Reminder: March 15 is the deadline for those wishing to submit abstracts for
a possible special session at MLA 2000, on the subject of "The Impact of a
Jewish Presence--or Absence--on British Romanticism."
Also, abstracts are solicited for a projected anthology on the topic. At
this point, I anticipate that the anthology will be divided into two parts.
The first will establish the contexts, with possible subjects including, but
not limited to cultural, historical, constitutional, legal, religious, ethnic
and gender aspects of the intersection between the British and Jewish
communities for the period between the failed Jewish Naturalization Bill of
1753 and Emancipation in 1858. The second part will be devoted to what can
broadly be considered Judaic aspects of British literature, focusing on the
expanded canon of the later twentieth century. Abstracts due by June 30.
For further information about either project, contact Sheila A. Spector,
either electronically, at <sheilaspector@aol.com> or by mail at 2121-C Powers
Ferry Road, Marietta, Georgia 30067.
