CFP: George Orwell as Modernist (4/1; MLA '00)

The deadline for abstracts for the following CFP has been extended to 4/1:

CALL FOR PAPERS: George Orwell as Modernist
Proposed Special Session for MLA 2000

Critical opinion of George Orwell has traditionally focused on his writing
as social comment, especially with regard to socialism, nationalism, and
his definition and critique of the totalitarian. His dicta on political
language have been debated in both academic and non-academic settings, and
his iconic (and iconoclastic) status for both Right and Left has been the
subject of careful analysis

Yet the continued presence of Orwell as a writer (particularly a writer of
fiction) suggests the necessity of understanding his strategies of
represntation. How, for example, does Orwell extend and interrogate the
novel, particularly the novel under modernism? How do the cultural topoi
of late modernity -- (post)coloniality, the fragmentation of the subject,
shifting gender relations, representation as commodity -- become manifest
in these texts?

Papers which attempt to rethink Orwell's engagement with these issues, as
well as with the question of embattled Modernism(s) are particularly
welcomed.

Abstracts of 500 words or completed papers by *April 1* to:
