*****MILLENNIAL ANIMALS UPDATE*******

Due to a printing delay, the convenors of *Millennial Animals:
Theorising and Understanding the Importance of Animals*
(University of Sheffield, UK 29-30 July 2000) have extended the
deadline for abstracts to the 2nd of April 2000. The call for papers
is as follows

m i l l e n n i a l
                      a n i m a l s

Theorizing and Understanding the Importance of Animals

          An International Multi-Disciplinary Conference
29-30 July 2000 at the University of Sheffield, UK

This conference provides a space for challenging understandings
of the beings against which humans are defined, as well as of
that definition itself. It comes in the context of (late) twentieth
century ideas which have radically altered the way "the human"
is understood and hierarchised in relation to other animals, and is
committed to developing these ideas. Therefore, with a multi-
disciplinary approach, millennial animals will consider the history
and practice of representing animal lives and bodies in a wide
range of cultural forms, ranging from fine art to fiction, poetry
and film, scientific to philosophical discourse, psychoanalysis to
religion, consumption to eco-politics, postmodern animal rights
to veg(etari)an identities.

We would be very pleased to receive abstracts, by 2nd April
2000, of around 300 words on any of the above or other areas. In
addition to providing an space for academics engaged in the
process of changing cultural attitudes to animals, we are equally
interested in artistic contributions: paintings, films, poetry, video
installations, fiction etc.

Guest Speakers: Carol Adams, and others to be confirmed.
