UPDATE: Sex, 'Race', Subjectivity, (Post-)Colonial (4/15 & 8/31; collection)

From: Brown & Sant (santbrown@lweb.net)
Date: Fri Mar 10 2000 - 11:10:27 EST

UPDATE: Deadline extended to 15 April (abstracts) and 31 August 2000
(papers); specialised papers sought to complete collection.

More papers are invited and the deadline extended for the edited
collection (book) with the working title, "Sex, 'Race', Subjectivity:
Re/Vamping the (Post-)Colonial," edited by Dr. Patricia M. Sant and Dr.
James N. Brown.

The original Call for Papers is quoted below:

"The book will be concerned with interrogating constructions of
sexualities and genders in (post-)colonial subjects in a variety of
texts/media and disciplines, and in exploring the impact, on cultural
constructions of gender and/or sexuality, of the encounter with the
colonized or colonizing Other. Particularly welcome are
interdisciplinary and theoretically grounded papers concerned with
continuing colonization in its multiple late-twentieth-century
manifestations. "

We have received a large number of excellent papers, but are now seeking
papers especially attentive to the following issues:

* the construction of "race," especially of the Other vis-a-vis the
colonizer (e.g., in Southeast Asia, Africa, Australasia, South America);

* constructions of gender and gendered difference, and dominant and
"deviant" sexualities, in colonial and (post-)colonial cultures;

* relationships within and between diasporean and colonizing cultures.

Ideally papers would be informed by the kinds of post-structuralist
theoretical paradigms which have come to prominence during the last
decade of the twentieth century, for example Whiteness and masculinity
studies, queer theory, and the "new" feminisms.

Please send 250-word abstracts by email (in the body of the email, *not*
as attachment), together with a brief author note and complete contact
details (full papers will be required by 31 August 2000). Only papers
which have *not* been previously published or submitted elsewhere can be
considered.

Inquiries, expressions of interest and abstracts, before 15 April 2000,
