Call for Papers

The conference will seek to respond to the increasing interest in this
topic which is evident across a wide variety of disciplines and it will
provide a significant contribution to current debates by acting as an
important point of focus. The work that is being done in this area is
extremely heterogeneous, and the conference will embrace and reflect this.
In particular, it will be concerned to encourage innovative critical
approaches and to extend and deepen the field by opening up new themes for
investigation. Proposals for papers which attempt to do this will be
particularly welcome.

Potential speakers are free to submit abstracts that pertain to any aspect
of the general subject area but suggested themes include:

                * landscape as event
                * landscape and the 'trace'
                * landscapes in film
                * moral landscapes
                * personified landscapes
                * landscapes and the body
                * landscapes and social policy
                * utopian landscapes
                * contemporary landscape representation
                * landscape and the ideology of improvement
                * landscape, identity, estrangement
                * landscapes and war
                * the new aesthetics of landscape
                * landscapes and theatricality/performance
                * somatic landscapes
                * macro/global to micro/domestic landscapes
                * landscapes and the politics of the past

It is assumed that the conference will focus on material from the
Renaissance to the present, but submissions dealing with earlier periods
will be considered.

Abstracts are to be 500-words long and should include the name of the
speaker, postal and email addresses, and details of their current
university or professional affiliation. The deadline for the receipt of
abstracts is 31st December 2000. It is hoped that most correspondence will
be able to take place by email and therefore potential speakers are
