CFP: Victorian Freaks, MLA 2000
Interested in proposals for MLA Special Session devoted to Victorian
monstrosity and the culture that produced it. Intersections with race,
imperialism, the circus arts, the society of spectacle, visuality,
ethnology, and other allied discourses/practices are welcome. What roles
did such spectacles play in metropolitan or provincial culture? How do they
help us understand the nexus between popular and elite classes? How do they
insinuate themselves into hegemonic forms such as the novel? Please send
300-400 word abstracts—no papers at this time, please—by March 15th. Robert
Aguirre, The John Carter Brown Library, Box 1894, Providence, RI. Email:
Robert_Aguirre@Brown.Edu; fax: 401 863 3477.
