    Fourth International English Culture Conference
    Theme: CULTURE AND NATION
    Dates: November 28, 29, 30, 2000
Venue: Faculty of Letters, University of Lisbon

Organized by the English Culture Studies Group, with the support of the
Department of English and the Centre for English Studies

** General (and Sessions') Call for Papers **

Building on the themes and perspectives of the previous conferences, in
which Family and Education, Culture and Identity, and Culture and
Citizenship were explored, the English Culture Studies Group announces the
Fourth International English Culture Conference, with the theme

                    CULTURE AND NATION.

Our main objective is to (re)examine the complex relations of Culture and
Nation in Modernity and Late Modernity. But we are equally interested in
class, gender and ethinicity as concepts and practices centrally relevant
    for our theme.

This year's Conference will combine keynote lectures (speakers to be
announced later) and, among other presentation and discussion contexts, the
following 115min.-sessions -- organised by members of the English Culture
    Studies Group:

Session #1: Gender, Education and Citizenship
    Session organizer: Adelaide Serras
    (aserras@mail.telepac.pt)

In this session we wish to approach questions of gender, education and
citizenship in modern Britain, with a special focus on the eighteenth century.
Papers focusing on women's issues, their fight for a more active public and
political role in connection with their educational curricula and
    opportunities are welcome.

Session #2: Gender, Science and Empire
    Session organiser: Teresa Malafaia
    (tvmalafaia@mail.telepac.pt)

The session aims to provide an inter-disciplinary forum for all those with
an interest in the area of Post-Colonial Studies. It is our purpose to
consider the different ways in which Gender and Science engaged / were
engaged by Empire in theVictorian age.

Session #3: Revolution, Citizenship and Nation Formation
    Session organizer: Valdemar A. Ferreira
    (valf@mail.doc.fl.ul.pt)

This session will try to address a wide range of issues focussing
on the evolution of national identities in an era of
globalization and on social movements of a post-revolutionary
kind as vehicles of personal, cultural and political change.

Session #4: Culture and Nation as lived contexts of power -- the
    perspective of class
    Session organiser: Alvaro Pina
    (ferpi@mail.telepac.pt)

The purpose of this session is to (re)examine Culture, Nation and the
complex relations between them as class practices in lived contexts of
    power.
