    7TH PERFORMANCE STUDIES CONFERENCE 2001: TRANSLATION, TRANSITION,
    TRANSFORMATION
    - The impact and power of discovering languages, changing perspectives,
    transforming through performance-

    Thursday 29 March - Sunday 1 April 2001, Department of Theatre Studies at
    the University of Mainz/Germany

    The 7th PERFORMANCE STUDIES CONFERENCE will focus on exploring questions of
    translation and transformation between languages, performance traditions and
    modes of perception. Conference participants are invited to examine issues
    touching on any of the following areas:

    * new disciplinary perspectives
    * interculturalism and aesthetics
    * European performance traditions (East and West)
    * Multilingualism and performance
    * Translation between performance and performance studies
    * Performance as transformation
    * the visual versus the verbal

    The setting of PS7 in Mainz, Germany, offers new opportunities for the
    Performance Studies Conference. For the first time, the conference will take
    place outside the anglophone world and the organizers wish to focus
    attention on the issue of language and cultural exchange.

    We invite artists and scholars from a diverse range of backgrounds who are
    engaged in current practice and debate on performance. Proposals are
    welcomed for a variety of presentation formats, including academic papers,
    performances, workshops, demonstrations, multi-media displays, roundtable
    dialogues, installations and exhibitions. We encourage participants to take
    a creative approach to their conference presentation with the aim to make
    transitions and transformations visible and happen.

    Collaborative proposals are welcomed.

    Proposals should be sent in form of a 250 word draft abstract/project
    description, including an estimate of the duration and technical needs.
    Please include your personal details, and, if you are affiliated to an
    institution, the address and contact number of that organisation and state
    your preferred mode of contact: mail, fax or email.

    Confererence Languages are English, German and French (or any combination
    thereof). Please let us know in which language you would like to give your
    presentation.

    Proposals should reach us not later than: 15 October 2000
