----Call for Papers ATSAH Call of Papers SECAC 2000/Louisville, Kentucky DEADLINE MAY 31, 2000
SECAC 2000, 18-21 October, Louisville KY - ATSAH sponsored session entitled "Anecdotal Women: Interpreting Biographical Accounts of Female Artists in the Early Modern Period (1500-1800)." The lives of women artists were often embellished by their biographers with sensational anecdotes which, although related in copious detail, nevertheless seem of questionable veracity. Typically such anecdotes, as well as topoi, are dismissed by art historians as fictitious chaff; yet, are there kernals of truth that might in fact be gleaned from these fascinating passages? Are they simply derived from literary models (such as Boccaccio's De claris mulieribus), or can they in fact be corroborated? This session seeks case studies that shed new light on the early modern construction and perception of the woman artist, and welcomes interdisciplinary approaches. Please send a 1-2 pg. preliminary abstract or consideration by June 1, 2000 to Julia K. Dabbs, Visiting Asst.Professor, Hollins University, P.O. Box 9565, Roanoke, VA 24020. If questions, contact me at (540)362-6376 or email: jdabbs@hollins.edu.
Best, Liana Cheney Professor of Art History, UMASS Lowell
