    UPDATE: SWSW submissions deadline extended to JUNE 1. Please note that the
    deadline is for abstracts to be received, and not a postmark deadline.

    The graduate students in the departments of English and Southern Studies
    at the University of Mississippi invite you to submit abstracts on or
    about the South for a graduate-level conference to be held in Oxford on
    the 21st and 22nd of July, 2000. Graduate students who attend the
    Southern Writers, Southern Writing Conference will be offered a special
    rate for the 2000 Faulkner & Yoknapatawpha Conference, to be held the
    following week in Oxford.

    We welcome both critical and creative submissions. Critical topics are
    not restricted to literature; we also welcome submissions from other
    disciplines, and we are particularly interested in interdisciplinary
    perspectives. Possible topics may include:
    Southern literature
    Southern politics or economics
    teaching the South
    (re)writing Southern history
    ethnographic research
    constructions of identity in the South

    Please send one- to two-page abstracts of critical work or entire creative
    works to:

    Reading limit is twenty minutes; please include your summer address with
    your submission. The deadline for submissions is June 1, 2000. There will
    be two monetary awards granted for critical essays presented.
