Call for Papers
SCS Queer Caucus
Society for Cinema Studies Conference
May 24-27, 2001, Washington, D.C.
"Backlash! The Resistance to Queery; Or, Foucault Couldn't Have Said It Better"
What do the following have in common?: a drop in queer, especially lesbian,
full-time academic hires; arbitrary caps placed on queer scholarly
publication by corporate-academic publishing companies; homophobic editorial
practices in queer and non-queer scholarly journals; an increase in
anti-glbt violence on campus, including assaults on glbt teachers by
students and support staff; a trend toward classroom and curricular
censorship that honors anti-glbt student-"clients"; a reversal of AA/EO
policy in several state university systems; the simultaneous promotion of
"dumbing down" and the "smart classroom"; administrative micro-management of
faculty governance procedures, including tenure and promotion; a re-opening
of the academic closet.
