“Charlotte Perkins Gilman in the Company of Women”
Society for the Study of American Women Writers (SSAWW)
First International Conference
San Antonio, Texas
Feb. 14-18, 2001.
The Charlotte Perkins Gilman Society invites proposals for a roundtable
discussion on teaching Gilman. In recognition of the SSAWW’s inaugural
conference, we are particularly interested in the way Gilman’s work is
taught in conjunction with the works of other American women writers and
thinkers. How does her work speak to that of literary peers with similar
backgrounds and experiences? How does the work of women writers of
color nuance Gilman’s own vexed notions of race and gender? How is
Gilman taught within the context of her female peers in sociology,
medicine, economics, etc.? How might references to Gilman’s own
intimate relationships with women friends and family affect class
discussions? What is Gilman’s role in the literary classroom today?
How do efforts to situate Gilman in the company of other women, as well
as Gilman’s own generic facility, lend themselves to more
interdisciplinary classes? Who are Gilman’s female heirs?
Since we envision this panel as a roundtable, participants will be asked
to limit their comments to approximately 8 minutes in order to
facilitate a larger discussion of the pleasures and challenges of
teaching Gilman’s work.
