Call for Papers
SSAWW--Society for the Study of American Women Writers
1st International Conference
San Antonio, Texas
February 14-18, 2001
American Women Writers of Children's Books
Panel sponsored by the Children's Literature Society of the American
Literature Association (ALA).
Paper proposals are solicited for a panel at the SSAWW conference concerning
American Women Writers of Children's books. Writers discussed may or may not
have written books exclusively for children, but the focus of the paper should
be on the area of their work that is directed to child audiences. Areas of
consideration may include but are not limited to: problems of credibility of
women children's book authors in the literary and academic communities;
progressions in children's books over time; imagery, subjects, or themes;
patterns in a single writer's work for children; treatment of girls,
step-mothers, and other female characters in American children's fiction; etc.
Please keep proposals limited to papers about books and/or book authors only
(as opposed to authors of children's periodical pieces). Completed papers
should take 15 minutes to read or talk about (about 8 pages). This is so that
more panelists may participate and at the end of the session we may have time
to discuss their topics plus a small display of artwork by American women
illustrators of children's books.
Please send a 1-page abstract and brief bio. inside an email message to the
panel chairperson by August 1st. (No attachments, please).
Send proposals to: ckirk@mnsfld.edu
