Sexual/Textual Violence and American Women Writers (7/20; 2/14/01-2/18/01)
Society for the Study of American Women Writers (SSAAW)
First International Conference
San Antonio, Texas
February 14-18
We are calling for papers for a proposed panel that will explore the ways
violence-by, for, or to women-is represented and functions in literature by
American women.
Papers may consider such questions as how violence plays within a text. Is
violence constructed and restricted within textual confines or does it rely
on lived violence experienced by women daily? What happens when women are
perpetrators rather than victims of violence? How do representations of
sexual violence-e.g., rape or S&M-function in the female-authored text? How
may violence affect a feminist agenda of the writer or reader? Can there be
something inherently violent about women’s writing perpetuated by their
violation of conventions of femininity? What about the violence of
representation?
Issues pertaining to race, ethnicity, class, environment, torture, war, the
violence of representation, literary authority, and feminism are all
relevant and welcome. Papers may include studies of single authors/texts or
of trends/theories of written violence.
Any approach and other related topics are also welcome.
Papers should be no longer than 15 minutes in length to provide session time
for respondents and discussion. Completed papers will be due January 20 and
made available to panel members, respondents, and conference participants.
Please submit via email (attachments ok) 250-word abstracts or completed
papers and contact information (email address, mailing address, phone
numbers, and institutional affiliation, if applicable) by July 25 to
