    BRITISH BRAIDS
Intercultural dynamics in the British Isles today
    Brunel University, Twickenham Campus, London
    19-21 April 2001

The British Braids conference is to address the diversity of contemporary
concepts and practices of ^LBritishness^y. The focus will be on
explorations of cultural production and interpretation ^m of literature,
screen texts, drama, music, dance, for example ^mwithin the changing
dynamics of cultural pluralism in the British Isles. Relations within and
between national or regional cultures and traditions (Scottish, Welsh,
Irish, English, Merseyside, etc.) and those of other ethnic, social and
    cultural groupings (Caribbean-British, British-Asian, African-British,
British-Islam, etc.) will be central concerns. Under the thematics of
identity politics, key questions will arise:

^E the mapping of individuality through or against groups
^E the plural self ^m bonus or trauma?
^E the visibility/invisibility of certain groups and cultures
^E innovations and retentions in language, cultural tradition, and
    ideology
    ^E diverging cultural receptions
^E negotiations of the impact of cultures centred abroad
^E the interweaving of race, gender, and sexual orientation, etc.

Please send abstracts of 250 words for papers, and/or panel suggestions,
