    Call for Papers:

    THE WITNESS AND THE IMAGE

    Society for Cinema Studies Conference, Washington D.C., May 24-27,
    2001

    This panel addresses the use of visual documents in bearing witness to
    historical trauma, paying particular attention to film/video works
    engaging with the public and/or private domain. Papers may analyze
    such issues as: the ethical address of visual documents; the revision
    of collective memory; the articulation of identity through bearing
    witness.

    Possible subjects may include (but are not restricted to) the
    Holocaust, Bosnia/Kosovo, Hiroshima/Nagasaki, the AIDS epidemic,
    natural or manmade disasters and human rights abuses.

    Please send or e-mail a 300-400 word paper proposal, a brief
    biographical note and a short bibliography for the paper BY SEPT 1,
