As a sign of human expression, architecture represents an exhibition of
    ethos and ideology.
Doorways, porticos, balconies, friezes, columns, public spaces, private
retreats, composition designs, garden annexes, pathways and rose-covered
gates signify modes of access and communication. In addition, all of the
above are designed uniquely to particular eras. Andreas Palladio, for
example, originated a window design that juxtaposed rectangular adjuncts
to a central arched frame that opened Renaissance vistas at the same time
that world exploration opened new vistas for literature. This panel seeks
papers that explore the relation between architecture and literature of any
historic period. Just as architecture holds to principles of design and
style, so, too does literature hold to certain principles that invite the
reader into a stylized composed space, and this panel seeks to examine the
stylistic inflections shared by both disciplines. Send proposals to
kostka@scsu.ctstateu.edu or to Edith A. Kostka at SCSU, English
Department, New Haven, CT 06515. Deadline is September 1, 2000.
