    Call for Papers:CNYCLL Contemporary Drama Session

    Defining the Avant-Garde in Contemporary American Theatre and Drama

    In the context of the influence of gender, race, class, post-colonial
    discourse, the persistence of "theatre of images", the expansion of
    "performance" (as both a practice -- "performance art" -- and a critical
    concept used outside theatre)what is avant-garde in contemporary American
    theatre and drama? Does it have a characteristic style, objective, or take
    place in particular contexts, venues, etc? Given financial circumstances and
    conservative pressures placed on theatres, arts organizations, etc, does
    it/can it still exist? Papers may examine contemporary playwrights,
    directorial practices, or group- authored pieces. All methodologies are
    welcome. Please send abstract only by September 1, 2000 to:
