Transgressions, University of Manchester 3-6 September 2001

Part of Made in Manchester Conference in celebration of the 150th
anniversary of the foundation of Owens College.

Please submit proposals for papers and panels by October 31st 2000 on
    the following themes:

Transgressions will explore different kinds of cultural transgression,
viewed across a spectrum from life-style to the arts. It will be
cross-disciplinary in focus, and its aim is to generate a productive and
self-reflexive dialogue within and across disciplinary boundaries. We
invite work which addresses the meanings and problems of transgression
    in the following contexts:

1.. trangressions: identities, social spaces and cultural practices:
Topics might include new sexual identities and identity politics,
consumption and identity, the relationships between social spaces, place
    and transgressive identities.
2.. transgressions: adaptations, cultural production and critical
practices: This section will address the relations between the arts,
exploring the many and multiplying interactions between literature,
theatre, music, the visual arts, cinema and television. There will be a
special focus on the 'formal trangression' involved in the juxtaposition
of one medium and another; not just the familar adaptation from page or
stage to screen, but also alternative procedures involved in the
production of experimental work. We also seek work that considers the
implications of 'formal trangressions' for the critical practices of
    specific disciplines.

Proposals should include a brief synopsis (no more than 2 pages) and a
    short cv.
