Histories of the Discipline, University of Manchester, 3-6 September
2001
(part of Made in Manchester Conference in celebration of the 150th
anniversary of the foundation of Owens College.)
The history of English studies is a history of boundary disputes. the
object and aims of the discipline have been subject to debate and
persistent redefinition since its emergence as an academic subject in
the nineteenth century. The anniversary of the foundation of Owens
College at Manchester University provides an excellent reason for
addressing this history and the present and future development of
English studies, given the central role played by civic universities
such as Manchester, Leeds and London in the establishment of English as
a discipline in the UK.
We invite proposals for papers and suggestions for panels on any aspect
of the history and development of English studies. Deadline: 31st
October 2000
Topics might include:
a.. the significance of theoretical controversies in shaping the
discipline
b.. canon formation and readerships
c.. the politics and ethics of literary criticism
d.. the impact of information technology upon teaching and research
e.. the establishment and development of new areas of enquiry, for
instance, feminist criticism, post-colonial criticism, queer theory,
eco-criticism, and the institutional and pedagogical issues this raises.
f.. the relationship between university and school English studies
Proposals should include a brief synopsis (no more than 2 pages) and a
short cv.
