    The Idea of Music in Victorian Fiction (working title)
            edited by Nicky Losseff and Sophie Fuller

    We are looking for proposals for essays to be included in this
    collection on musical representation in Victorian British fiction.

    Essays on the following topics would be welcome:

    representations of instrumental practice;
    aspects of gender, sexuality, race, religion, class in relation to music
     making, musical taste, performance spaces and situations;
    musical style as wordless communicant;
    educational practices;
    issues surrounding nationalism;
    philosophical issues;
    medical issues;
    the interaction between fiction and 'real-life' situations (disguised
     representations of living composers or performers in fictional contexts,
     for instance).

    But other topics will also be considered, as long as they focus on some
    interpretative aspect of fictional representation(s) of music.

    It is not anticipated that the collection will include essays about opera
    libretti or about settings of Victorian texts by composers or essays which
    principally describe novels with musical themes. However, short
    contributions which do not fall strictly into the categories described and
    which may not be considered 'scholarly' in the usual sense of the word are
    encouraged. Submissions are encouraged from both musicologists and
    literary scholars.

    Proposals should be sent to both the book's editors (nl5@york.ac.uk and
    sophie@full.demon.co.uk) by 1 September 2000. If proposals are accepted,
    the deadline for submission of articles will be 1 September 2001.
