         PROFESSING ENGLISH

New Jersey College English Association Annual Spring Conference

         March 24, 2001

         Seton Hall University

In recent years, the status, condition, and future of post-secondary
English Studies has changed dramatically. With the crisis of the job
market, the decline of secondary schools, the influx of students of a
variety of backgrounds and disciplines, the impact of technology in
and out of the classroom, and the changing nature of the academic
world in general, Universities, and particularly English Departments
have had to face difficult and challenging decisions. In short, the
Profession of English, whether that profession reflects a choice of
career or lifestyle, has, clearly, changed. The topic of the
conference is intended to address any aspect of the profession itself
and the nature of what we, within that profession, profess, declare,
confirm, even proclaim within and beyond it.

Papers and panels addressing any aspect of college English will be
considered, especially those addressing issues associated with the
Profession, such as English education; composition programs; canon
formation; the general state of the profession; "creative" vs.
academic writing; the position of adjuncts and graduate students; the
state of the English major; ESL, Developmental, and bi-lingual
programs; the status of critical theory (its impact in the
twenty-first century); particular periods and areas of study and their
continued relevance; teaching pedagogy and methodology; the impact of
technology in and out of the classroom; the changing faces of faculty
in English Departments; issues of gender, race, and culture as they
affect us as scholars, teachers, and colleagues.

The NJCEA brings together those interested in language, literature,
pedagogy, and other aspects of the teaching and study of
English-anyone with an interest in any of these topics, or indeed
others, is encouraged to propose a paper or a panel.

         Submission of Proposals:

Graduate students, faculty, adjuncts, and other professionals within
