    NEMLA 2001 (March 30-31, 2001)

    Chair: Kristin Zimmerman
Session Title: "Twentieth-Century Surrealist Women Writers"

Description: Papers are welcome that examine the written works of surrealist
women artists hailing from a variety of countries and decades.

This panel is a continuation of the dialogue begun in 1998 in three panels
called "The Problematics of Power and the Twentieth-Century Female Writer", a
single panel in 1999 called "The Image or Representation of the 'Double' in
Twentieth-Century Female Writers", and a single panel in 2000 called "Dreams
and Dream Sequences in the Works of Twentieth-Century Female Writers."

    Rationale:
The academic community began formally recognizing the works of surrealist
women in the 1980s. Until that time, women had been associated surrealism
only in their capacity to serve as objects of artistic adoration or, in its
most perverse form, as objects of artistic mutilation. Recovering the
surrealist women' writing has mandated a reexamination of the role of women
in surrealism. Penelope Rosemont's anthology entitled Surrealist Women (UP
Texas, 1998) offers samples of surrealist women's writing from ninety-seven
women in twenty-eight different countries, spanning the 1920s to the 1990s.
Such an anthology has introduced interested readers to the variety and
quality of writing produced by surrealist women. This panel serves as an
arena where scholars can present further research on such writers and their
texts. The approach may be theoretical and/or interdisciplinary.

While the focus is on women writers, the session is in no way intended to
exclude male voices. Proposals for papers by men will, of course, be
    considered.
